Marta Bengoa is a Full Professor of Economics at the Colin Powell School, City College of New York (CUNY-CCNY), where she has served since 2020. She also holds an External Professor of Economics position at the South African Research Chair in Industrial Development (SARChI) at the University of Johannesburg since 2018.

Her research focuses on international economics, trade, growth, and innovation. She has extensively studied the impact of trade agreements on FDI, the relationship between R&D and productivity, and the health consequences of China's hukou policy for migrants. Her work combines theoretical modeling with empirical analysis using regional and firm-level data.
Current research projects include analyzing R&D tax credit effectiveness in South Africa, institutional influences on migrant entrepreneurship in the U.S., trade effects of non-tariff measures in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), and employment shifts related to innovation in Uruguayan manufacturing. She has secured multiple research grants including funding from the South African Research Chair program and PSC-CUNY.

- CCNY Provost’s Outstanding Teaching Award (2015)
- Named among 200 most relevant women in economics in Spain
She has advised PhD students at the University of Johannesburg and University of Cantabria, and mentored numerous MA and undergraduate students at CCNY in topics spanning trade theory, economic development, and pandemic-related policy analysis.
