Marta Bashovski

Dr. Marta Bashovski serves as Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Regina, currently on sabbatical until July 2026. Her academic journey began with a BA Hons from the University of British Columbia, followed by MA and PhD degrees from the University of Victoria, establishing her foundation in critical political thought.

Professor Bashovski's research interrogates the politics of knowledge and language, analyzing how political categories and narratives constrain or enable action. She uniquely positions cultural objects—novels, music, art, film—as substantive political theory expressions rather than mere illustrations. Her scholarship extends to resistance theories, narrative politics, critical methodologies, Enlightenment political thought, and international relations, consistently examining how knowledge practices shape political possibilities across historical and contemporary contexts.

Recent publications reveal an interdisciplinary trajectory connecting political subjectivity in crises (2023), Enlightenment thought in modern politics (2022), migration's political economies (2022), and IR conceptual analysis (2019). These works demonstrate her signature approach: tracing how interpretive frameworks loop back to constitute political realities through journalistic, academic, and activist knowledge practices.

Her current book projects deepen these investigations: 'Art as Thought: A Methods Manifesto' (with Danielle Taschereau Mamers) analyzes visual art's role in critical political thinking, while 'Determinations of Dissent' examines social movement interpretations across knowledge communities. Professor Bashovski also conceptualizes teaching as 'critical and relational community-building practices,' reflecting her commitment to pedagogy as political praxis.
