Mart Kalm is a Professor and Rector (until 2025) at the Estonian Academy of Arts, where he has worked since 1992. He previously served as Dean of the Faculty of Art and Culture (2007–2012) and built the Institute of Art History (1994–2007). A member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences (2010–2024, Vice-President 2014–2024), he focuses on Estonian 20th-century architecture, interwar periods, and Soviet collective farm design.

His research spans architectural history, heritage conservation, and comparative studies across Baltic and European contexts. Notable works include Estonian 20th Century Architecture (2001) and 100 Years of Estonian Architecture (2018). He has advised on heritage projects for the Parliament building and Presidential Office.
Recent publications analyze Soviet-era architecture and Baltic interwar trends. Awards include the Estonian Cultural Endowment's Grand Prix (2002), State Science Prize (2011), and Kr. Raud Prize (1994). Kalm co-led the Estonian UNESCO World Heritage Committee delegation (2010–2013) and served on the ELIA Executive Board (2018).
