Marshall Gilkes

Marshall Gilkes is an Associate Professor of Jazz Studies & Contemporary Media at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester. Renowned as a virtuosic trombonist, he is celebrated for his technical mastery, warm tone, and versatility across jazz and classical traditions. His career spans 20 years with eight albums, Grammy nominations, and collaborations with artists like the Maria Schneider Orchestra and WDR Big Band.

Research interests focus on jazz performance, brass innovation, and ensemble dynamics. His work bridges traditional and contemporary media, exemplified through compositions and large-ensemble arrangements. Gilkes has taught at institutions including Manhattan School of Music, Berklee College of Music, and the New School for Jazz.
