Associate Professor Marnee Shay is the Deputy Head of School in the School of Education at the University of Queensland. As a Principal Research Fellow and an Aboriginal researcher, her work focuses on Indigenous education, policy, flexi-schooling, and youth studies. She holds strong connections to the Ngen'giwumirri language group and South East Queensland Indigenous communities. Her research emphasizes strengths-based approaches and Indigenous evidence to inform policy, with notable contributions including the award-winning book *Indigenous Education in Australia: Learning and Teaching for Deadly Futures* (2021). She serves on government advisory committees and has received prestigious awards for her leadership and research impact.
Shay's education includes a Bachelor of Indigenous Studies, Postgraduate Diploma, Master of Education (Research), and PhD from Queensland University of Technology. Her research spans qualitative methodologies, Indigenous pedagogies, and cross-cultural collaborations. Key projects include the 'Big Mob STEM It Up' initiative and studies on flexi-school student experiences. She advocates for equitable education systems through co-design principles and culturally responsive practices.
Her scientific awards include the 2020 ACEL Excellence in Leadership Award and the 2021 UQ Foundation for Research Excellence Award. Grants have supported her work on Indigenous youth wellbeing, STEM participation, and policy analysis. She collaborates with institutions globally, including the University of Glasgow and James Cook University.
