Dr. Marley Willegers is a Research Officer and Lecturer at Bangor University's School of Psychology and Sports Science. She holds a PhD in Sport Psychology (2022), MRes in Sport Psychology (2018), and BSc in Sport Health and Exercise Sciences (2016). Her academic responsibilities include teaching research methods and statistics to undergraduate and postgraduate students, and supervising student research projects.
Her research examines the intersection of personality, emotion regulation, and risk-taking in health contexts, with specific focus on how high-risk sports like mountaineering buffer against social insecurity. She collaborates with organizations including Healthwise Wales and the Natural Environment Research Council.
Dr. Willegers' publications concentrate on performance psychology in extreme sports, particularly exploring emotion regulation mechanisms in climbing disciplines. Her single identified article (2023) establishes foundational work in agentic processes within adventure sport psychology.
She leads significant projects including:
- Climbing out of crime: An outdoor rehabilitation framework for insecure family attachments (Oct 2023-Oct 2024)
- Performance psychology package development for North West Air Ambulance clinicians
- Wales COVID-19 behavioral response analysis funded by Bangor University Innovation Award (£47,535)
As Chief Investigator for the NWAA project, she secured extended funding for data analysis and scaling psychological interventions for emergency responders.
