Marlene Laruelle is a Research Professor of International Affairs and Political Science at George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs, and Director of the Illiberalism Studies Program. She specializes in analyzing populist and illiberal movements across post-Soviet Eurasia, Europe, and the U.S., with a focus on Russian nationalism, ideology, and foreign policy. Her work also examines Central Asia's nationhood, Arctic policy, and the intersection of conservatism and authoritarianism.
Her research integrates political philosophy and empirical analysis, exploring topics such as memory politics, the Russian Civil War, and the global spread of illiberal governance models. Recent work addresses Russia's ideological evolution under Putin, the implications of its war in Ukraine, and transnational far-right connections. She has directed major programs like the Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies (IERES) and the Central Asia Program (CAP).
Laruelle's publications span monographs, edited volumes, and peer-reviewed articles, emphasizing geopolitical shifts, civilizational politics, and the conceptualization of illiberalism. Her interdisciplinary approach bridges academic research with policy-oriented insights, particularly on Eurasian dynamics and authoritarian resilience.
