Marleen Janssen is a Full Professor of Congenital and Acquired Deafblindness at the University of Groningen, affiliated with the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences. Her research focuses on communication interventions, autonomy development, and caregiving for individuals with deafblindness. She leads the Developmental and behavioural disorders in education and care: assessment and intervention department.
Her expertise aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly improving access to education and health for marginalized groups. She has published extensively on topics such as cognitive development in deafblindness, video-feedback coaching, and layered communication models. Her work bridges theory and practice, emphasizing practical interventions for individuals with severe sensory impairments.
Janssen holds editorial roles at journals like Frontiers in Psychology and Perspectives on Deafness. She has organized major events, including the Symposium Opening of the University of Groningen Institute for Deafblindness. Her awards include the Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion (2019) and grants for deafblindness research (2013–2016).
Her research also explores psychosocial development and self-determination theory in deafblind populations. She collaborates internationally and actively engages in public outreach through media appearances and educational programs.
