Prof. Marleen H.J.M. Janssen is a Full Professor in Special Needs Education at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences. Her expertise focuses on congenital and acquired deafblindness, multi-sensory disabilities, and communication strategies for individuals with sensory impairments. She chairs the international master's program Communication and Deafblindness and serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Deafblind Studies on Communication. She collaborates with institutions like Royal Dutch Kentalis and DB-Connect, advancing research and practice in sensory disabilities. Her research emphasizes autonomy development, intervention fidelity, and psychosocial theories in deafblind populations. Awards include the Knight of the Netherlands Lion and Ubbo Emmius Collghie membership.
Education:
- Master in Special Education (Utrecht University)
- PhD in Social Interaction with Deafblind Children (Radboud University Nijmegen)
Research & Teaching: Teaches courses on sensory disabilities, ethical issues in education, and theories/models in deafblindness. Supervised seven PhD students, with five graduates and two nearing completion. Active in international networks like Deafblind International.
Labs/Teams: Leads the University of Groningen Institute for Deafblindness, fostering collaboration between academia and practice.
