Markus Wessendorf is a Professor and Department Chair at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. He holds a PhD in Applied Theater Studies from the University of Giessen, Germany. His research focuses on experimental and avant-garde theatre, performance studies, and dramaturgy. He has published works on topics ranging from terrorism and diaspora to deconstruction, including a monograph on Richard Foreman’s Ontological-Hysteric Theater and co-edited volumes on interdisciplinary theatre arts. He serves as managing editor of *The Brecht Yearbook/Das Brecht-Jahrbuch* since 2018 and has directed productions such as *Uncle Vanya and Zombies* and *Smile, You’re Under Surveillance!*. Wessendorf is also the president of the International Brecht Society since 2024.
His academic contributions span teaching, directing, and collaborative projects, blending theoretical and practical approaches to theatre. As an educator, he teaches courses on script analysis, dramaturgy, and contemporary performance practices. His work often intersects with critical theory and interdisciplinary methods, reflecting his commitment to innovative theatrical practices.
Wessendorf has collaborated with artists like Pei-Ling Kao on dance-theatre productions and led devised-theatre initiatives. His editorial and leadership roles underscore his influence in global theatre scholarship.
