Markus V. Garlauskas is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Center for Security Studies (CSS) at Georgetown University and Director of the Indo-Pacific Security Initiative at the Atlantic Council's Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security. With nearly 20 years of U.S. government service, he served as National Intelligence Officer (NIO) for North Korea from 2014 to 2020, leading strategic analysis and supporting high-level policy deliberations, including presidential transitions and summit preparations. His career includes 12 years in Seoul at UN Command/US Forces Korea, where he held roles such as Chief of Intelligence Estimates and Director of Strategy Division.

His expertise focuses on East Asia security, intelligence analysis, military operations, and strategic deterrence. He has received the Joint Civilian Distinguished Service Award for his contributions to defense strategy. Garlauskas advises on U.S.-Korea alliances and Indo-Pacific stability through the Indo-Pacific Security Initiative, leveraging his blend of government experience and academic research.
