Markus Thali is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at the Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine, University of Vermont. He has been with the department since 1999, following his position as Assistant Professor at the University of Lausanne. His research focuses on understanding how genetic and biochemical information is transmitted between cells and how this influences cellular and organismal fate, with particular emphasis on HIV-1 and tetraspanin biology.
- Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Zürich, Switzerland (1990)
- Postdoctoral research with Joseph Sodroski at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Harvard Medical School
Thali's primary research interests center on HIV-1 virus-cell relationships, specifically investigating how retrovirus HIV-1 subpopulations spread between cells and how tetraspanins control trophoblast fusion during placental development. His work bridges virology, cell biology, and membrane dynamics, with a particular focus on viral entry mechanisms, cell-cell fusion, and viral transmission pathways. His laboratory has made significant contributions to understanding how tetraspanins influence HIV-1 replication and spread.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent focus on HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein dynamics, tetraspanin-enriched microdomains, and cell-cell transmission mechanisms. His work spans from fundamental molecular mechanisms of viral entry to the development of computational tools for cell migration analysis, demonstrating both depth in virology and breadth across biological disciplines. The research shows an evolution from early work on HIV-1 envelope structure and neutralization to more recent investigations of membrane microdomain organization and its impact on viral spread.
As a dedicated educator, Thali teaches courses including MMG 3330 Genetics & Genomics, MMG 6990 Ethics in Graduate Research, and HCOL 2000 Viruses in Eco & Human Health, mentoring the next generation of scientists in both theoretical and ethical aspects of biomedical research.
- Current laboratory team includes Mel Symeonides, lab technicians Madeline Carr and Petra Velijkovic
- Advises PhD student Jon Girard and Master's student Keegan Smith
- Mentors multiple undergraduate researchers including Emily Mynar, Samantha Tafrate, Christen Frandina, and Tatum Cubrilovic
His laboratory investigates the intricate relationship between viruses and host cells, with particular emphasis on how HIV-1 manipulates cellular membrane organization to facilitate its spread. The lab combines advanced microscopy, molecular virology, and computational approaches to unravel the complex mechanisms of viral transmission between cells.
