Markus Suta

Dr. Markus Suta is a Researcher in the Condensed Matter and Interfaces group at the Debye Institute for Nanomaterials Science, Utrecht University, Faculty of Science. He completed dual M.Sc. degrees in Chemistry and Physics at the University of Siegen, Germany, followed by a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry under Prof. dr. C. Wickleder.

Dr. Suta's research focuses on luminescence spectroscopy, nanothermometry, and the optical properties of materials containing lanthanides. His doctoral work centered on synthesizing halides with divalent lanthanides (Sm²⁺, Tm²⁺, Yb²⁺) and investigating their optical spectra alongside theoretical models. He also studied point bulk defects like self-trapped excitons and color centers for scintillating materials applications.

Currently working as a postdoc under Prof. dr. A. Meijerink, he leads experimental and mechanistic investigations of luminescence nanothermometry within the EU-funded FET-Open project nanoTBtech (grant agreement no.: 801305). His recent publications reveal a strong emphasis on developing theoretical frameworks for ratiometric single ion luminescent thermometers and exploring novel materials for temperature sensing applications.
