Markus Schlaich

Markus Schlaich is a Professor and holds the Dobney Chair in Clinical Research at the University of Western Australia (UWA) and Royal Perth Hospital. He is affiliated with the UWA Medical School and the Department of Internal Medicine. His expertise lies in hypertension, cardiorenal disease, and metabolic disorders, with a focus on the sympathetic nervous system and renal denervation. He leads the Dobney Hypertension Centre, aiming to develop novel therapies for hypertension and its complications.

Education & Career: Relocated from Germany in 2006, previously Head of the 'Neurovascular Hypertension & Kidney Disease Laboratory' at Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Research Institute. Currently serves on multiple committees, including the Executive Committee of the High Blood Pressure Research Council of Australia and the International Society of Hypertension.

Research Interests: Pathophysiology of hypertension, sympathetic nervous system modulation, renal denervation, and clinical translation of therapies. Key contributions include advancing renal denervation as a treatment for resistant hypertension.

Awards: Recipient of the Australian Museum Eureka Prize for Medical Research Translation and 18 other research awards. Recognized for work in hypertension and cardiorenal/metabolic disease.
