Markus Muttenthaler is a Professor in the Department of Biological Chemistry within the Faculty of Chemistry. His expertise lies at the intersection of peptide chemistry, molecular biology, and drug discovery, with a focus on neuropeptides, biofilms, and cancer therapeutics. He holds a PhD and Dipl.-Ing. in engineering.
Research Interests: His work spans oxytocin receptor signaling, gastrointestinal biofilms, and peptide-based drug development. Recent projects include developing theranostic peptides for breast cancer and gut disorders, and investigating microbial biofilms in inflammatory bowel disease. His research aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and well-being.
Projects & Awards: He leads initiatives such as the MC hEag1DrugDis project targeting oncogenic ion channels and has received prestigious awards including the Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Award (2014) and ERC Proof of Concept Grant (2020). Over 60 peer-reviewed publications and 11 funded projects highlight his impact.
