Prof. Dr. Markus Hertwig holds the Chair of Sociology of Digital Transformation at Ruhr University Bochum's Faculty of Social Sciences, within the Institute of Industrial Engineering. His research program examines the societal impacts of technological change through four interconnected themes:
- Digitalization of Work and Organization: Analyzing how information technology transforms labor practices, including platform-based work and Industry 4.0.
- Transnationalization of Work: Investigating globalization effects on multinational corporations and cross-border labor markets.
- Labor Market Precariousness: Studying corporate flexibilization strategies and their consequences for employment security.
- Corporate Interest Regulation: Exploring new forms of employee representation in digital economies.
His recent publications focus on digital labor transformation, with research examining platform economies, hybrid work models, transnational labor solidarity, and resistance strategies against corporate union-busting. Articles demonstrate consistent thematic alignment with his chair's research pillars, particularly regarding technological impacts on work organization and employee advocacy.
He leads a research team at RUB including research assistants and student collaborators, coordinating projects such as 'Hybrid Advocacy in the Digital Economy' and 'European Works Councils after Brexit'.
