Dr.-Ing. Markus Fritz is a Researcher and Coordinator of the Business Unit Climate-Neutral Buildings at the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI. He has been with the institute since July 2018, focusing on energy efficiency, waste heat utilization, and the water-energy nexus. Since February 2020, he has co-hosted the enPower podcast discussing the German energy transition. He earned a doctorate in engineering (Dr.-Ing.) from the Technical University of Darmstadt in 2022, following his environmental engineering studies there (graduated 2018).
His research emphasizes maximizing energy efficiency in industrial and building sectors, particularly through waste heat integration. Key areas include optimizing heat supply systems, analyzing the water-energy nexus, and evaluating policy instruments for energy efficiency. Notable projects include WÄRME4ALLE (participatory heating transition strategies) and Path2LC (municipal low-carbon planning).
Recent publications span podcast analyses, technical reports, and journal articles addressing topics like district heating potentials, municipal energy policies, and financing guidelines for the energy transition. His work highlights practical implementation challenges and policy frameworks for achieving climate neutrality.
Led by his Climate-Neutral Buildings unit, he collaborates on interdisciplinary projects advancing sustainable energy solutions, including studies on waste heat utilization in Zelzate, Belgium, and strategic planning for decarbonized heating systems.
