Markus Berli is an Associate Research Professor in Environmental Physics at the Desert Research Institute (DRI), with academic affiliations to the Graduate Program of Hydrologic Sciences at University of Nevada Reno and the Water Resources Management Program at University of Nevada Las Vegas. His research focuses on the intersection of soil physics, mechanics, and hydrology, particularly in arid environments.
Dr. Berli's primary research interests involve modeling and measurement of soil structural dynamics affecting fluid flow and solute transport, with particular emphasis on the connection between hydraulics and mechanics of soils at the micro-scale. His work spans from pore-scale to field-scale analysis, with applications in understanding post-fire hydrology, soil water repellency, and soil compaction. He has developed innovative methods for in-situ characterization of soil hydraulic and mechanical properties, utilizing advanced techniques like X-ray Micro-Tomography and Neutron-Tomography to assess soil pore geometry and water flow.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on wildfire impacts on soil properties and hydrological processes, with numerous studies examining how fires alter soil structure, water repellency, and subsequent flood risks in arid regions. His work bridges fundamental soil physics with practical applications for water resource management and environmental protection in fire-prone landscapes.
Dr. Berli teaches Vadose Zone Hydrology (GEOL 719) at the University of Nevada Las Vegas and is actively involved in several research programs, including the Scaling Environmental Processes in Heterogeneous Arid Soils (SEPHAS) initiative. His research has significant implications for understanding how climate change and increasing wildfire frequency may alter hydrological processes in arid ecosystems.
