Markku Kuittinen is a Professor and Deputy Head of the Department of Physics and Mathematics at the University of Eastern Finland's Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology. His research focuses on nanophotonics, plasmonics, metamaterials, and laser physics, with significant contributions to optical fabrication techniques and nonlinear optical phenomena. He has led multiple projects, including the 'Electron beam writer investment project, Ebeam2' (2024–2026) and 'Working life oriented collaborative approach to photonics fabrication skills development' (2024–2025).
Key research interests include resonant waveguide gratings, metamaterials for enhanced light-matter interaction, and advanced fabrication methods like nanoimprint lithography and atomic layer deposition (ALD). His work bridges fundamental optics with applied technologies, such as high-power laser systems and space instrument components for the METIS mission.
Recent publications highlight advancements in chiral lasers, graphene-silicon hybrid devices, and quantum dot photoluminescence. Over 200 peer-reviewed articles demonstrate his prolific output in journals like Applied Physics B, Nanophotonics, and Optics Express.
