Markku Jahnukainen is a Professor and Vice Dean at the University of Helsinki, leading the Department of Education Diversity in Society and Life (DIVSOL). He is affiliated with the Helsinki Inequality Initiative (INEQ) and the Helsinki research community of special educational needs (SEN). His academic roles include supervision of the Doctoral Programme in School, Education, Society, and Culture. He holds an external position as Adjunct Professor at the University of Alberta (since 2010) and serves as a Professorial Fellow at the JP Das Centre on Learning & Developmental Disabilities (since 2020).
His research focuses on transitions of individuals with diverse educational needs and comparative educational policy in inclusive and special education. Key areas include special education reforms, equity in education, and the implementation of tiered intervention systems. He has contributed to projects such as EDUCA: Education for the Future (2024–2028) and BRIDGE: School as a Bridge for Youth (2024–2027).
Jahnukainen has been recognized with awards such as the OKKA Foundation’s Recognition Award (2019) and the Article of the Year Award 2018. His recent publications address topics like mental health in schools, educational support systems, and inclusion strategies. He actively engages in policy discussions, media commentary, and international academic collaboration.
