Dr. Mark Wong is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Public Policy & Research Methods and Deputy Head of Urban Studies at the University of Glasgow. His research focuses on digital and AI policy, anti-racism, and co-design methodologies. He holds a PhD in Social Policy from the University of Edinburgh and has led interdisciplinary projects like the £4.43M PHAWM initiative. Mark advises the Scottish Government on anti-racist infrastructure and co-chairs the Design Advisory Group for the Anti-Racism Observatory for Scotland (AROS). His work bridges academia and practice, addressing systemic racism in AI/data systems and promoting equitable digital service design.
Research interests include responsible AI, racial justice, co-design methods, and social data science (e.g., network analysis). He has published in top journals like New Media & Society and Information, Communication & Society. Notable media appearances include BBC Radio 5 Live and The Sunday Times. Mark’s teaching awards include the 2020 Social Policy Association Outstanding Teaching Award for the Social and Public Policy program.
Grants include £4.43M (RAI UK) for participatory AI auditing, £3.34M (UKRI) for minority ethnic online protection, and leadership roles in projects like the SEvEN video game promoting climate action. He also co-convenes the Social Network Analysis in Scotland (SNAS) group and advises on data infrastructure for health equity in Scotland. His work emphasizes amplifying marginalized voices in tech development and policy.
