Dr. Mark Whalan is a Professor and Head of the English Department at the University of Oregon, holding the Robert D. and Eve E. Horn Endowed Chair. He specializes in American modernism, the Harlem Renaissance, and African American literary studies. His research bridges historical and cultural analysis, with a focus on race, ethnicity, and 20th-century cultural movements.
Whalan’s academic career began at the University of Exeter (UK) before joining UO in 2011. He has authored five major books, including World War One, American Literature, and the Federal State (2018) and The Cambridge History of American Modernism (in progress). He co-edits the Edinburgh University Press series Modern American Literature and the New Twentieth Century and serves on the editorial board of Journal of American Studies.
His work has appeared in journals such as American Literary History, African American Review, and Modernism/Modernity. Current projects include leading the Cambridge History of American Modernism, which redefines the field through interdisciplinary and transnational perspectives.
