Mark Wallace is the James Hormel Professor of Social Justice at Swarthmore College, holding joint appointments in Religion and Environmental Studies. With a PhD from University of Chicago, his scholarship examines intersections between Christianity, ecology, and indigenous worldviews.
Wallace pioneered 'Christian animism' theory that re-envisions nature as spiritually alive. His award-winning book When God Was a Bird received the 2019 Nautilus Gold Award. Research explores ecological re-enchantment, climate justice, and postcolonial critiques of anthropocentrism.
He co-directs the Chester Semester Program connecting students with community justice initiatives. Wallace's work develops sustainable spiritual practices responsive to environmental crises while drawing on contemplative traditions.
