Research Interests:
Dr. Vail specializes in the comparative political economy of advanced industrial countries, with particular attention to Western Europe. His work explores how social and economic policies are forged through the interplay of political institutions, industrial-relations systems, and prevailing ideational frameworks. He investigates the evolution of welfare states, labor-market reforms, and the shifting contours of liberalism and neoliberalism in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. A recurring theme is how national traditions of solidarity shape public responses to crises such as COVID-19 or the euro-area turmoil.
Publication Trajectory:
Across more than two decades, Vail’s scholarship has tracked the changing political economy of Europe. Early studies dissected corporatist bargaining and welfare-state recalibration in France and Germany. Mid-career work expanded to encompass varieties of liberalism and Keynesian revival during the Great Recession. Recent articles pivot to contemporary challenges—energy transitions in Germany, pandemic-era solidarity, and Brexit’s reconfiguration of British conservatism—demonstrating a sustained engagement with policy paradigms under stress.
