Melissa Harris-Perry

Melissa Harris-Perry is the Maya Angelou Presidential Professor at Wake Forest University, holding joint appointments in the Department of Politics & International Affairs, Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and the Program in Environment and Sustainability. She founded and leads the Anna Julia Cooper Center, focusing on intersectional justice through research and action. Previously, she taught at the University of Chicago, Princeton, and Tulane universities.

Education: B.A. in English from Wake Forest University (199?), Ph.D. in Political Science from Duke University (1999), theological studies at Union Theological Seminary. Media roles include co-hosting System Check and interim hosting of The Takeaway. Former MSNBC host of Melissa Harris-Perry (2012-2016).

Research expertise spans Black political thought, gender politics, and religion's role in public life. Awards include the Hillman Prize and multiple honorary degrees. Serves on boards of The Century Foundation, The Next 100, and The Markup.
