Mark Svede is a Lecturer at The Ohio State University, specializing in contemporary international cinema and Latvian modern/contemporary art. His research spans experimental film, Soviet nonconformist art, and cultural phenomena like dandyism and architectural subterfuge. He co-authored Art of the Baltics (2002), curated exhibitions including the 2011 Venice Biennale Latvia Pavilion, and managed Latvian acquisitions for the Norton and Nancy Dodge Collection at the Zimmerli Museum, Rutgers University. His work often intersects art history, film restoration, and Cold War cultural resistance.
Research interests include Soviet-era artistic expression, transnational art dialogues, and the intersection of visual culture with social movements. Notable projects include restoring the Soviet underground film Self-Portrait by Andris Grinbergs, which gained international acclaim through screenings at Anthology Film Archives and film festivals.
Publications emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to art and cinema, with recent focus on contemporary Latvian artists and pavilion exhibitions. Though primarily an academic, he maintains a tree farm as a personal endeavor.
