Mark Summers is a Professor holding the Thomas D. Clark Professorship at the University of Kentucky's Department of History. Specializing in 19th century US history, political history, and political cartoons, his research explores topics such as the Gilded Age, Reconstruction, and the interplay between media and politics.
His notable works include books like Rum, Romanism, and Rebellion: The Making of a President, 1884 (2000) and A Dangerous Stir: Fear, Paranoia, and the Making of Reconstruction (2009). He has also authored articles analyzing historical events, including the Louisiana election of 1865 and Lincoln's nomination process. Summers has maintained an active role in academic advising and previously held office hours in Spring 2017.
His research interests extend to the historical analysis of political cartoons as tools of commentary and their role in shaping public discourse during pivotal moments in American history.
