Dr. Mark Spanier is an Associate Professor at Dakota State University (DSU), affiliated with the Beacom College of Computer & Cyber Sciences. He serves as Coordinator for the MS in Artificial Intelligence program, co-director of DSU’s Artificial Intelligence Lab, and faculty co-advisor for the AI Sweden Industrial Immersion Exchange Program. His teaching focuses on Discrete Math, Cryptography, Machine Learning, and Foundations of Computation, employing inquiry-based methods with technology.
Education: Ph.D. and B.S. in Mathematics from North Dakota State University (2015 and 2010).
Research interests span minimization, optimization, and approximation, with applications in cryptography, AI/ML, number theory, and signal processing. Recent publications address topics like federated learning security, data privacy in mHealth, and mathematical operator theory.
Grants: Principal Investigator for the $125,000 Educational Pathway Institution (EPI) grant. He advises DSU’s Gaming Club, Competitive Programming Club, and AI Club. Active in academic outreach through lab leadership and international exchange programs.
