Mark Schlossman is a Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). His research focuses on nanoscale phenomena at water and aqueous solution interfaces, including molecular self-assembly, ion transport, and electrostatic control. He leads the Water Interfaces Group and has developed advanced X-ray scattering techniques at synchrotron facilities like ChemMatCARS. His work bridges experimental methodologies, data analysis, and theoretical models to study interfaces critical for environmental applications like water purification. Prior to UIC, he held positions at the University of Chicago and Harvard University. Schlossman’s educational background includes a BS from MIT and a PhD in Physics from Cornell University.

Research Interests: Schlossman’s lab investigates ion distribution at liquid-liquid interfaces, peripheral membrane protein interactions, and the development of synchrotron-based X-ray scattering tools. His studies on solvent extraction and rare earth ion separation aim to enhance industrial and environmental processes. Recent work includes exploring peptide surfactants for rare earth recovery and voltage-tunable nanoparticle arrays at interfaces.
Key Projects: Leadership in ChemMatCARS beamline operations at the Advanced Photon Source, development of graphene liquid cells for electron microscopy, and structural analysis of tim proteins in membrane systems. His contributions to X-ray reflectivity and fluorescence techniques have advanced understanding of interfacial phenomena.
