Mark Scheper

Mark Scheper is a Professor at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences leading research in data-science and healthcare with emphasis on pediatrics. He heads Data Supported Healthcare (a transdisciplinary unit with 5 PhD students) and the HR Datalab Healthcare within the Center of Expertise for Healthcare Innovation (IVG) and creating010 (CMI). Externally, he is affiliated with Macquarie University Sydney and Medical Delta (Livinglab Better Beyond).

His educational background includes licensure as a physical therapist, clinical movement science training at the Free University of Amsterdam, and a 2019 PhD from the University of Amsterdam on hypermobility disorders in children. He completed two postdocs in rare diseases and chronic youth conditions while training as a data-scientist.

Research spans pediatrics, rare diseases (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome/hypermobility spectrum disorders), chronic pain, and AI/data science applications in healthcare. His work addresses responsible technology use through transdisciplinary collaboration, founding the national Ehlers-Danlos center at ErasmusMC and Data Supported Healthcare to tackle societal healthcare challenges.

Publications evolved from clinical hypermobility studies (2015-2020) to current AI frameworks (2023-2025), highlighting trends in clinical decision support, responsible AI implementation, and inclusion of allied health professionals in digital health innovation.

Prof. Scheper serves as data-scientist and methodologist for research groups across pediatrics, complex pain, transitions in care, midwifery, and dementia. He is a senior counsel member of the Dutch Society for Physical Therapy and leads international collaborations:
