Mark S. Fox is a Professor of Industrial Engineering and Computer Science and Distinguished Professor of Urban Systems Engineering at the University of Toronto. He is the Founding Director of the Centre for Social Services Engineering and Head of the Enterprise Integration Laboratory. His research focuses on applying AI, ontologies, and constraint-directed reasoning to urban systems and engineering systems.
Education:
- BSc in Computer Science, University of Toronto (1975)
- PhD in Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon University (1983)
Research Interests: Dr. Fox pioneered AI applications in manufacturing, scheduling, and project management. His work includes developing ontologies for enterprise modeling (e.g., TOVE project), constraint-directed scheduling systems, and AI-based diagnostic tools like PDS/GENAID. Current research emphasizes Smart Cities and social services engineering.
Awards:
- Fellow of AAAI (1991)
- Fellow of Engineering Institute of Canada (2009)
- CP Rail Medal (2011)
Labs & Leadership: Leads the Enterprise Integration Laboratory and founded the Centre for Social Services Engineering. Previously directed the Intelligent Systems Laboratory at Carnegie Mellon and held leadership roles in global initiatives like the Intelligent Manufacturing Systems Program.
