معرفی
Mark S. Byrd is a Professor in the Physics Department at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He has been at SIU since 2003 and specializes in Theoretical Quantum Computation and Quantum Error Correction. His office is located in Neckers Hall (room 477/491) and he can be reached at 618-453-2271.
Education:
- B.S. in Physics and Mathematics (1992)
- Ph.D. in Physics from University of Texas at Austin (1999)
Dr. Byrd's research focuses on quantum information science, particularly quantum computation and error correction techniques. He is a member of the Quantum Computing Group at SIU and maintains the Qunet Quantum Information and Computation wiki, which serves as a resource for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students. His work bridges theoretical physics with practical applications in quantum computing.
Dr. Byrd teaches a wide range of physics courses from introductory to advanced graduate levels, including University Physics series (PHYS 205A/B/C), Quantum Mechanics (PHYS 430, 440), and specialized courses in quantum computing. His teaching spans both undergraduate and graduate curricula, demonstrating his commitment to physics education at all levels.
As an active researcher in quantum information, Dr. Byrd has established himself as a specialist in theoretical approaches to quantum computation. His work contributes to the foundational understanding necessary for developing practical quantum computers that can overcome decoherence and other quantum-specific challenges.
Professional Experience:
- Postdoctoral position with Daniel Lidar's group at University of Toronto
- Postdoctoral position with Navin Khaneja at Harvard University (Division of Engineering and Applied Science)
- Faculty member at Southern Illinois University since 2003
