Dr Mark Richter is a Lecturer in Technical Art History at the University of Glasgow’s School of Culture & Creative Art. His research focuses on the scientific examination of cultural heritage materials, particularly artists’ techniques in polychrome sculpture and paintings from the 16th to 18th centuries. He holds a PhD from the Courtauld Institute of Art and an MA in Conservation from Cologne University.
Research Interests: Richter specializes in the analysis of artists’ materials and techniques, including pigment identification, binding media characterization, and the study of historical art technological sources. His work integrates advanced analytical methods with art-historical context, particularly for Golden Age Spanish art and early 20th-century European painting.
Publications & Projects: His recent work includes studies on Romanesque polychromy in German choir screens, Baroque altarpiece techniques, and the materials used in Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s paintings. He has collaborated on EU-funded projects like CHARISMA and contributed to exhibitions such as 'Unwrapping an Icon: Lady in a Fur Wrap'.
