Mark Randall James is an independent Researcher specializing in Theology, Scriptural Interpretation, and Jewish-Catholic hermeneutics. He is currently preparing for ordination as a priest in the Episcopal Diocese of Washington (expected July 2025) while maintaining his academic work as an Independent Scholar.
His scholarly focus lies in classical Christian and Jewish Biblical interpretation, particularly how reading scripture facilitates wisdom formation. He authored Learning the Language of Scripture: Origen, Wisdom, and the Logic of Interpretation (analyzing Origen’s Homilies on the Psalms) and co-edited Signs of Salvation: A Festschrift for Peter Ochs, contributing an introduction connecting Ochs’ pragmatism to the Jewish wisdom tradition.
James also practices Scriptural Reasoning, an inter-faith scripture study method, and serves as co-editor for the Journal of Textual Reasoning. He previously worked as Children’s Minister at Christ Church + Washington Parish in Washington, DC.
