Dr. Mark Nieuwenstein is an Assistant Professor at the University of Groningen, affiliated with the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences and the Department of Experimental Psychology. His academic journey includes a M.Sc. in Cognitive and Clinical Neuropsychology from Utrecht University (1999) and a Ph.D. in Psychology from the same institution (2004). He has held postdoctoral positions at MIT (2004-2006) and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (2006-2008) before joining the University of Groningen in 2008.
His research focuses on cognitive processes such as working memory, attentional control, dual-task interference, and media multitasking. Notable projects include studies on memory-driven attentional capture, survival-processing advantages, and the effects of resit exams on study behavior. He has authored over 86 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to high-impact journals like Psychonomic Bulletin & Review and Journal of Experimental Psychology.
Nieuwenstein’s work explores how cognitive mechanisms underpin real-world behaviors, with implications for education, multitasking in digital environments, and decision-making theories. He currently coordinates programs in Biopsychology and supervises graduate students in the Research Master’s in Behavioural and Cognitive Neurosciences.
