Mark Mizruchi is the Robert Cooley Angell Collegiate Professor of Sociology, Barger Family Professor of Organizational Studies, and Professor of Management and Organizations at the University of Michigan. He serves as Director of Organizational Studies within LSA. His research focuses on the role of corporate elites in politics, economic sociology, and organizational theory, particularly addressing elite fragmentation, corporate power, and democratic decline. His work critiques the erosion of centrist political influence by American corporate elites and explores how this contributes to polarization.
Key research interests include the historical evolution of corporate governance, the impact of elite cohesion/disintegration on democracy, and the intersection of business and political institutions. Notable works include The Fracturing of the American Corporate Elite (2013) and analyses of elite networks in U.S. political economy. Mizruchi’s findings highlight how declining corporate leadership in centrist politics has destabilized American governance, exacerbating partisan divisions.
He frequently collaborates with institutions like the Niskanen Center, contributing to public discourse on depolarization strategies. His publications span theoretical debates, empirical studies, and policy-oriented analyses, addressing topics from shareholder value capitalism to the globalization of banking systems. Mizruchi’s interdisciplinary approach bridges sociology, political science, and business studies, offering critical insights into elite behavior and institutional change.
