Dr. Mark Manning serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Oakland University's College of Arts and Sciences, with his office located in Pryale Hall, Room 202. He can be contacted at (248) 370-2343 or markmanning@oakland.edu, and maintains a professional website at markmanningphd.com.
Dr. Manning's research program centers on understanding how information (including perceived norms, racism, and social determinants) influences health behaviors and outcomes, with particular emphasis on racial health and healthcare disparities. His work examines how structural, systemic, and individual racism contribute to disparities in secondary prevention behaviors such as cancer screening, employing behavioral decision-making principles to trace the pathways through which racism affects health outcomes.
Prior to joining Oakland University, Dr. Manning held positions as Assistant Professor in the Department of Oncology at Wayne State University and Scientist in the Population Studies and Disparities Program at the Karmanos Cancer Institute. He earned his Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst under the mentorship of Icek Ajzen, where his early work focused on perceived norms and behaviors.
Dr. Manning has expertise in structural regression modeling and multilevel modeling, and is currently recruiting Master's students for his social health psychology lab to work on NIH-funded research examining messaging interventions to increase at-home colorectal cancer screening among African Americans.
