Mark Mandarano serves as Associate Professor, Department Chair, and Director of Instrumental Activities in the Music Department at Macalester College. An internationally active conductor, he performs at venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Moscow Conservatory, with recent cultural ambassador tours of American music across Russia.
His education includes a Master of Music from Peabody Conservatory and Bachelor of Arts from Cornell University.
Mandarano specializes in contemporary classical repertoire and championing living composers, having premiered works by John Corigliano, Nico Muhly, and Libby Larsen. His research interests focus on American musical heritage and cross-cultural performance practices, evidenced by sold-out Russian tours featuring Gershwin (2017) and Bernstein (2018).
Award recognition includes:
- Prize-winner in the conducting competition of Nuremberg, Germany (2005)
He maintains significant external engagements as Artistic Director of the Sinfonietta of Riverdale (founded 2008) and holds staff positions with Pacific Symphony Orchestra and American Symphony Orchestra. His collaborative work spans major orchestras including Los Angeles Philharmonic, Houston Symphony, and State Symphony Orchestra of Russia.
Mandarano's performance practice integrates academic leadership with active international touring, emphasizing American musical identity through collaborations with conductors like Valery Gergiev and Leonard Slatkin.
