Professor Mark Maconochie is a Professor of Biomedical Sciences at Queen Mary University of London, affiliated with the School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences. He serves as Co-Director of the Nanchang Joint Programme with Nanchang University, China, focusing on Clinical Medicine (Biomedicine). His teaching responsibilities include designing and delivering Cell Biology and Anatomy modules, while he actively integrates emerging technologies into education, such as lecture recordings with Turningpoint software, remote tutorial systems, and electronic assessment platforms. He advocates for student engagement through digital tools, noting evolving generational shifts in technology adoption.
His research centers on Developmental Neurobiology, particularly the molecular mechanisms governing inner ear development and deafness. Key contributions include studies on Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) and Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF) signaling pathways, as well as retinoic acid’s role in otic epithelium formation. He also prioritizes animal welfare, striving to minimize research impacts on experimental animals.
Recent publications include chapters on FGF regulation in the developing otic epithelium and retinoic acid signaling in the otocyst, both in press, alongside a 2013 study on Gata3’s role in Fgf10 expression. His work bridges basic science and translational applications, addressing critical gaps in understanding sensory organ development and congenital disorders.
