Professor Mark Lewis is a leading academic in Musculoskeletal Biology at Loughborough University, serving as Dean of the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences (2012–2024) and University Academic Lead for Strategic Partnerships since 2024. His career includes roles at University College London, the University of Bedfordshire, and Cranfield University. Lewis holds a PhD in Biochemistry from Imperial College London and has held academic positions since the 1990s.
Research focuses on tissue engineering, skeletal muscle regeneration, and biomaterials. Notable projects include developing bioengineered skeletal muscle models, investigating extracellular vesicles in aging, and optimizing therapeutic applications of mesenchymal stem cells. He also explores clinical applications in orthopaedics and interventional pain management.
His articles span musculoskeletal biology, bioengineering, and innovative medical technologies. Collaborations include Coventry University and Imperial College London. Leadership roles include directing the Muscle Cellular and Molecular Physiology Research Group (2009–2011) and serving as Honorary Professor at UCL.
