Mark Levels

Mark Levels is a Full Professor of Sociology of Technology and University Dean for Lifelong Development at Maastricht University. He is affiliated with the School of Business and Economics and leads the Research Centre for Education and the Labor Market (ROA). He also holds fellowships at the Berlin Social Science Centre (WZB) and serves as an expert for GPAI and WHO.

His research focuses on societal challenges involving artificial intelligence, education systems, labor market integration, youth well-being, and migration. He employs quantitative, qualitative, and experimental methods to produce evidence for policy design. His work emphasizes transdisciplinary collaboration with governments, corporations, and NGOs to drive social change.

His recent publications reveal a strong focus on AI’s impact on work, automation risks, retraining inequalities, and social media effects on youth. His research combines sociological inquiry with labor economics and public health perspectives, reflecting interdisciplinary trends in addressing modern societal transformations.

Mark Levels has secured major research grants from NWO, NRO, DFG, JSPS, ANR, and H2020, and advises governments and international organizations. He founded the international TECHNEQUALITY consortium and co-led the Nationaal Cohortonderzoek Onderwijs (NCO), a premier educational dataset in the Netherlands. He teaches sociology at University College Maastricht.

He has held visiting positions at the European University Institute, Nuffield College (Oxford), Harvard Kennedy School, and the German College for Interdisciplinary Education Research. He previously served in the Royal Dutch Army before entering academia.
