Mark Lee is a Design Critic in Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD), where he has held academic roles since joining in 2007. He is also a founding partner of the internationally acclaimed architecture firm Johnston Marklee, established in 1998. His work spans diverse scales and typologies, with projects in North/South America, Europe, and Asia, including the Menil Drawing Institute (2018), the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago renovation (2017), and the UCLA Graduate Art Studios (Culver City, CA). Lee’s firm has garnered over 30 major awards and is featured in major museum collections such as MoMA and the Art Institute of Chicago. He has taught at institutions like Princeton University, UCLA, TU Berlin, ETH Zurich, and held prestigious chairs including the Cullinan Chair at Rice University and the Frank Gehry International Chair at the University of Toronto.
Lee’s architectural practice emphasizes innovative design solutions for cultural and institutional spaces, blending contextual sensitivity with avant-garde approaches. His academic contributions include courses like *The Spectacular Vernacular* and co-directing the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial. His firm’s projects reflect a commitment to sustainability, urban integration, and adaptive reuse.
