Mark L. Adrian is an Associate Research Professor at the Department of Physics, Auburn University, with a career spanning academia, NASA, and advanced space research. His professional journey includes roles such as Astrophysicist at NASA's Heliophysics Science Division (2004-2021) and Research Scientist at the University of Alabama, Huntsville (2002-2004).
- Ph.D. in Physics, University of Alabama, Huntsville (2000)
- M.S. in Physics, University of Iowa (1993)
- B.S. in Physics, University of Iowa (1989)
Research Interests: Dr. Adrian specializes in space plasma physics, with a focus on Earth's coupled thermospheric-ionospheric-plasmasphere-magnetospheric (TIM) system, solar wind dynamics, dust distribution in the solar system, and lightning-related phenomena like red sprites and terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs). He has also pioneered the development of miniaturized spacecraft instruments such as the Thermal Electron Capped Hemisphere Spectrometer (TECHS), its ion counterpart TICHS, and the Compact Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (C-EUVI).
Selected Publications: His work spans magnetospheric ion dynamics, solar wind turbulence, and wave propagation studies. Key projects include the development of advanced diagnostic tools for space missions like NASA's MMS, STEREO, and Wind.
Labs & Teams: Dr. Adrian has collaborated with NASA's Laboratory for Geospace Physics, the Wind mission team, and the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission team. His research integrates team-building for scientific mission development and resource-constrained spacecraft instrumentation.
