Mark Kochanski

Mark Kochanski serves as an Associate Teaching Professor in the Division of Computing & Software Systems at the University of Washington Bothell's School of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics. With over 25 years of professional experience in the computing industry, he brings substantial real-world expertise to his academic role.

Professor Kochanski's research and teaching interests focus on database technologies, user-friendly applications, component-based systems, and XML technologies. His work emphasizes creative solutions to complex real-world problems through practical software development approaches. His industry background spanning from the 1970s to present informs his teaching philosophy of developing software developers capable of growing into technical leads and software architects.

Having worked across computing environments ranging from palm devices to mainframes and from standalone to massively distributed systems, Kochanski has developed expertise from device drivers and database engines to business and scientific applications. His career includes significant experience in the petroleum industry developing data models and applications, as well as founding his own consulting company, Albion Technology, in 1993.

His educational background includes an M.S. in Economic Geology with a computer application-based thesis from Purdue University (1984), where he studied both geology and computer sciences. This interdisciplinary foundation supports his holistic approach to software development education.
