Dr. Mark Johnston is an Associate Professor in the Department of English and Creative Writing at the University of Windsor. He holds a B.A. (Hons.) from Western University, an M.A. from Queen’s University, and a Ph.D. from Western University. His research focuses on early modern English drama, including Shakespeare and his contemporaries, children’s drama, the history of medicine, and gender/queer studies. Current projects include co-editing Queering Childhood in Early Modern English Drama and Culture and researching early modern barber-surgeons’ activities. His major work Beard Fetish in Early Modern England explores facial hair’s cultural significance in sex and gender identity. He teaches courses on Renaissance drama, gender theory, and early modern cultural history.

Research interests integrate performance studies with historical analysis, particularly examining intersections of gender, medicine, and theatrical practices. Ongoing projects investigate the socio-cultural role of barber-surgeons and queer interpretations of childhood in early modern dramas.
