Mark Hunter is a Professor in Human Geography at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC), where he also serves as Associate Chair, Graduate. His research combines historical-ethnographic methods and spatial analysis to investigate structural violence in health, education, addiction, and labor, primarily in South Africa. With over 30 years of fieldwork experience, he focuses on inequalities shaped by race, gender, and class.
- Education: PhD in Geography (UC Berkeley), MA in Development Studies (University of KwaZulu-Natal), BA (Hons) in Politics (University of Sussex)
His work spans HIV/AIDS, educational systems, and drug use, currently funded by SSHRC. Theoretical influences include Marx, Fanon, Bourdieu, and Gramsci.

He advises graduate students in education, health, gender, race, and development studies, and leads the Drugs at Work research project.
