Mark Hertling is a Professor of Practice in Leadership at the Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College. He holds a DBA from Crummer and has an extensive background spanning military leadership, healthcare administration, and academic teaching. Retired US Army Lieutenant General, he commanded over 60,000 soldiers as Commanding General of US Army Europe and led troops in Iraq. Post-military, he served as Senior Vice President at AdventHealth, authored Growing Physician Leaders, and designed leadership programs with over 1,200 graduates. He advises non-profits like Mission: Readiness and lectures on leadership, national security, and healthcare.
Education includes a BS from the US Military Academy, three master’s degrees (kinesiology from Indiana University’s School of Public Health, military arts from the Army’s School of Advanced Military Studies, and international relations from National Defense University), and a DBA from Rollins College.
Research focuses on leadership development in healthcare, including inter-professional programs and physician leadership efficacy. His work emphasizes organizational commitment, shared vision, and leadership training in top nonprofit hospitals. He currently teaches leadership courses to MBA students and serves as a senior military analyst for CNN.
Engaged in policy roles, Hertling served on President Obama’s Fitness Council and now sits on the American Battle Monument Commission. He contributes to academia through Crummer’s Dean’s Alliance and remains active in public health initiatives.
