Dr. Mark Hay is an Assistant Professor at the Department of History within the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication. His research focuses on international relations, war diplomacy, financial history, and women’s roles in 18th-19th century Atlantic World contexts. He holds a PhD from King’s College London, funded by the AHRC, with prior studies in Amsterdam, Paris, and Oxford.
His current projects include studying female management of Dutch banking houses post-1815 and a comparative analysis of French and British financial strategies during the Napoleonic Wars. Key research outputs include works on Dutch financial diplomacy, the House of Orange’s military reorganization, and transatlantic finance in the Age of Revolutions.
Hay’s work engages with global economic networks, colonial pasts, and digital humanities methodologies. His research has been recognized through grants like the Economic History Society Carnevali Award and Association of Low Countries Studies Prize.
He actively contributes to academic discourse through conferences, organizing events like 'Navigating the Atlantic Revolutions' (2025), and presenting on topics such as Amsterdam financial networks and cross-border payments in the early 19th century.
