Associate Professor Mark Harvey is a linguist at the University of Newcastle, focusing on Aboriginal languages, historical linguistics, and social organization. His work bridges linguistic theory with cultural preservation, particularly through documenting endangered Indigenous languages.
- Current projects include Proto-Australian reconstruction and Kaytetye language documentation.
- Key research areas: phonology, complex predicates, ethnobiology, and Indigenous spatial knowledge.
His 2015 ARC Discovery Project examines Kaytetye's unusual structure to challenge phonological theories, while his 2014 ARC project investigates genetic relationships among Australian languages through Yanyuwa documentation. Other work explores landscape constructions in Aboriginal social organization, showing that land mapping is more consistent than clan/kinship systems.
Recent publications focus on:
- Coronal stop contrasts in Wubuy (2014-2016)
- Proto-Australian reconstruction (2024)
- Indigenous tourism development (2017-2019)
- Nominal classification systems (1997-2002)
Grants include:
- $208,604 (2015-2017) - Kaytetye prosodic theory
- $510,121 (2019) - Lexical access in Australian languages
- $416,963 (2019) - Time-layered cultural map of Australia
- Multiple ARC grants (2005-2007, 2014-2016)
His supervisory role includes:
- PhD theses on complex predicates (2022), Kaytetye phonology (2021), and Indigenous tourism (2019)
- Co-supervision of research on Saudi EFL engagement (2015)
Harvey developed online linguistics assessments for large classes and contributed to curriculum design for both linguistics and interdisciplinary programs. His administrative roles include discipline convener (2006-present) and casual staff management.
