Mark Griffiths is a Distinguished Professor of Behavioural Addictions at the School of Social Sciences, Nottingham Trent University. He leads the International Gaming Research Unit and specializes in behavioral addictions such as gambling, gaming, and internet addiction. His roles include teaching on undergraduate/postgraduate psychology programs, conducting mixed-methods research, and advising governments and gaming companies on responsible practices. He has supervised over 50 PhD students and holds 26 international awards, including the US National Council on Problem Gambling’s Lifetime Research Award.
Education: BSc (First Class Honours) in Psychology (University of Bradford, 1987), PhD in Psychology (University of Exeter, 1990).
Research Interests: Behavioral addictions (gambling, gaming, internet use, exercise, sex, work addiction), cyberpsychology, and the psychology of sexual behavior. He uses self-report methods and online data collection to study topics like video game transfer phenomena, excessive online gaming, and mindfulness.
Awards & Recognition: Over 26 awards, including the British Psychological Society’s Excellence in Teaching Award (2006), US John Rosecrance Prize (1994), and Italian Premio Imbucci Award (2018). He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society, Royal Society of Arts, and Academy of Social Sciences.
Consultancy & Media: Advises governments (UK, Australia, Sweden, Norway) and over 50 gaming firms on social responsibility. He has appeared on 3,500+ TV/radio programs and written for major publications like The Guardian and The Washington Post.
Grants & Collaborations: Collaborates with institutions globally (e.g., University of Gibraltar, National Cheng Kung University, McGill University) and has secured funding from organizations like GambleAware and the UK Gambling Commission.
